A Green Build First

STEVENS CONSTRUCTION CORP. EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS ON FIRST LEED-CERTIFIED HOUSING PROJECT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

MADISON, WIS. (June 4, 2009) - A goal to develop the first LEED-certified student residence on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus became a story of exceeded expectations for the owner, McKinley Foundation. Presby Hall, a six-level, structural steel frame, 48-unit residence covering 101,394 total square feet, was planned to achieve LEED Silver certification. Instead, Stevens Construction Corp. in concert with the design and engineering team, garnered LEED Gold for the project.

Ensuring that high standards of sustainability were met, the team lead by Stevens Construction maximized energy efficiency by employing the use of a deep well ground source geothermal heating and cooling system. In addition, Stevens Construction managed the procurement of materials, both regional and non-regional, that contained high contents of recycled product, while implementing construction-activity pollution prevention and indoor air quality plans, maintaining an eco-friendly job site.

"Student housing projects are always challenging with the drop-dead move-in dates required. Adding the complexity of the LEED requirements was definitely an audacious goal. We are very proud to have met the challenge, ultimately exceeding the expectations of all involved", replied Geoff Vine, President of Stevens Construction.

Through dedication and teamwork, Stevens Construction was able to deliver the most sustainable student housing project on campus, while helping provide an economic boost to the local economy.
