Construction on Goodwill Project Begins

CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON THE AREA'S EIGHT GOODWILL-SUPPORTED APARTMENT BUILDING

MADISON, WIS. (Oct 25, 2011) - After several months of planning, Stevens Construction Corp. is excited to announce that construction has begun on the site for the future Goodwill-supported Sandra Hall Apartment Building.

Earlier this year the City of Madison purchased the jobsite land from the current owner on behalf of the Goodwill Industries. The rest of the construction costs will be covered by a grant from the U.S. Department of Urban Development (HUD).

Construction on the single-level building began earlier this month and is scheduled to be completed in the spring of next year. Located on Madison's East side with easy access to the city bus system, the project, once completed, will offer seven one bedroom units available for rent by individuals with chronic mental illnesses. This project will be the eighth Goodwill-supported apartment building in the area and will bring the total number of rental units available for eligible tenants to 74!.

The building is being named after former Goodwill employee, Sandra Hall. During her 13 year tenure with the Goodwill Industries, Sandra, was instrumental in developing housing and employment support programs for those in need.. Sandra currently still remains involved with the organization through serving on their affiliate board.

This particular program is one of the few within the Goodwill movement that provides housing. The idea to begin providing housing was developed by members of the program back in the 1970's, shortly after health officials decided to begin moving individuals with mental illnesses out of institutions. The concern for those individuals was that there would be no safe or affordable place for them to go.

So, in partnership with HUD, Goodwill was able to get a federal subsidiary which enables eligible tenants to rent a one bedroom unit from the Goodwill Industries for only a third of their overall income. Not only do these apartments provide a safe and affordable environment for residents to call home, but they also offer a community of resources to help residents learn the skills necessary to successfully live on their own.

"Stevens is excited and proud to partner with Goodwill Industries on such a project that will ultimately benefit members of the communities in which we live and work," commented Mark A. Rudnicki, CEO of Stevens Construction Corp.
